Physiotherapy with a Difference

Most people in modern life breathe and move incorrectly. These faulty movement and breathing patterns cause predictable overload on specific structures and areas of the body. When this overload persists, it can lead to pain, injuries, or poor physical and mental performance.

For example, some people move in a way that causes persistent tension in their shoulders, neck, and jaw. These clients typically develop recurring problems and injuries in the upper body. Common symptoms may include headaches, neck pain, shoulder injuries, or tension in the jaw and shoulders. Similarly, other movement patterns can cause chronic overload in different areas, such as the lower back, hips, knees, lower legs, and feet.

Meet The Team

Our team includes therapists and exercise professionals from different backgrounds. All our therapists have been extensively trained in the Be Activated approach and apply their knowledge and experience to achieve more lasting results.

About Carel

Carel, a passionate physiotherapist, was determined to create lasting change in the healthcare industry. Frustrated with the short-term results of standard treatments, he sought a more sustainable approach. In 2010, he attended his first Be Activated course, which greatly influenced his career. Using the knowledge gained, Carel founded CW Physios in Durban, South Africa, and expanded the practice over the next decade, building a team of specialized therapists.

In 2020, Carel relocated to Melbourne, Australia, where he established The Activation Clinic and continues to work as a specialist therapist. He is also an international educator, presenting Be Activated training courses and collaborating closely with founder Douglas Heel to help transform the health industry.

We provide specialised treatment - not your typical therapy session

“We aim to provide more solutions to our clients problems instead of just treating and managing their symptoms.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is "Be Activated"?

The Be Activated assessment and treatment approach was developed by Douglas Heel.  It’s about identifying and correcting faulty breathing and movement patterns. These patterns are often the underlying cause to pain, injuries, and poor performance.

How long does Activations last?

The goal of activations is to provide our clients with the knowledge to manage their improved health independently. The effects of activations are generally long-term. There are however factors in modern life that can shut our bodies down. The goal is to learn to identify those factors and apply simple strategies to maintain optimal breath, movement and mental well-being.

Who can benefit from treatment?

Activations benefit people from all walks of life from the everyday office worker to elite athletes, children, and seniors.

  • Individuals with persistent overload, pain, or injury.
  • Anyone looking to improve breathing and movement.
  • Active people aiming to improve performance at all levels
  • Those wanting to regulate their nervous system and improve mental well-being.
  • High performers in work, life, and sport.
How do Activations influence mental health?

There is a close correlation between our physical and mental health. When we are in danger, either real or perceived threats, our nervous system goes into ‘Fight, Flight or Freeze” mode. This change in the nervous system also causes various physical changes in our body, influencing many structures and symptoms.

Over time, these physical changes can become fixed and soon unnoticed. With activations, we unlock physical restrictions in the body. This affects us in different ways, including how we move, breathe, and our body posture, etc. When things shift in our physiology, it immediately influences our nervous system and that can have a dramatic effect on how we feel.

What happens when we exercise?

Unfortunately, when we exercise, we generally do not correct our faulty movement patterns. We typically reinforce and strengthen our incorrect patterns. This is, unfortunately, contrary to common belief. This, however, does not mean that exercise has no value.

What we need is to correct and maintain a good breathing and movement pattern before we exercise. This will allow us to train in correct patterns and have way more value from the time committed to exercise. Your activation therapist will teach you simple techniques to use as part of your warm-up to improve your movement sequence and ultimately boost your results with training.

How does it work?

Once we have identified and understand your individual faulty movement patterns, we will release specific soft tissue restrictions that are limiting your nervous system in using your muscles correctly.

When we remove these restrictions, our bodies have the amazing ability to change and restore normal function. This often happens instantly and allows your body to heal.

How do you improve posture?

Improving posture involves a lot more than changing bad habits, exercising or being aware of how we sit and stand. When we use faulty breathing and movement patterns, we adopt specific body positions to allow for these incorrect patterns. In other words, we need to be in a poor posture to use our bad patterns.

In order to change your posture, we need to restore normal breathing and movement. Once this is corrected, our body posture tends to restore automatically and become much easier to maintain.

How many sessions will I need?

Clients are generally seen for 3-5 sessions, each lasting 60 minutes, to work through the basic activation program. Follow-up sessions are scheduled based on the individual needs of each client and may vary accordingly. Our goal is always to resolve issues and provide long-term solutions.

For elite athletes, follow-up sessions may be arranged more frequently. The focus here is to maintain an optimal firing pattern to enhance performance and minimize injuries.

For those who see the value in ongoing work, there are additional options. These include activations to restore visual field discrepancies, training with the ‘Butt Bungee,’ level 2 activations, Mind vs Body training, and more.

What is the Mind-Body connection?

What’s in the MIND is in the BODY. And what’s in the BODY is in the MIND. “Douglas Heel -Founder, Be Activated. As therapists, we need to always recognise the interrelationship between the MIND and the BODY. When our MIND(mental state, thought patterns, behaviour patterns) becomes overwhelmed, it triggers many physical changes in the body.

Some of the more obvious ones are muscle tension and posture. Also, changes in heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, and our digestive system. All triggered by our mental state, but influencing our physical health.

Likewise, if our bodies are stuck in certain postures and movement patterns, it immediately affects our mental state. As therapists, we need to recognise both to be more successful in assisting our clients.

What to expect at the first session?

Once we have gained a good understanding of your problems, how it’s affecting you and what you are aiming to achieve, we will look at your movement patterns. It is important that you gain an understanding of what your body is doing.

Most pain patterns, injuries and poor performance are not random. It’s important to understand why you are developing these problems so that you can learn to overcome them.

Once we understand your patterns, we will start changing the way you breathe and move. In the sessions, we will be encouraging you to feel what is happening and changing in your body. When you are more connected to your body, it becomes easier to heal.

We will first look at correcting your breath and movement around your pelvis, and thereafter correcting movement in the legs, trunk and upper body. This is done in sequence in order to get more lasting results.
